IMPORTANT SPRING HAIR COLOR TIPS

WHAT YOUR COLORIST NEEDS TO KNOW...

With spring (technically....somewhat) here and summer on it's way, many of you are considering freshening up your color. Even for those of who know all the in's and out's of coloring, the actual trip to the salon can be nerve racking. Whether you are making a dramatic change or just updating your existing style, there are a few things stylists all wish their clients knew from Cutler/Redken Salon senior colorist Elizabeth Hiserodt.

Consider Your Skin: When trying a new hair color, considering the undertones in your skin - yellow, pink, or olive - is crucial! Not all tones can wear all types of hair color. Look for inspiration from women that generally have a similar skin tone to your own. Pink undertones should stay away from gold - it will make your skin appear redder. Olive undertones should try cooler tones to keep skin from looking sallow. Yellow undertones can pull off just about anything (warm or cool!)

Get Clean-ish: When you come to have your hair colored, make sure your hair is clean, but not freshly clean... day old clean is good. You don't want to have product build up or dirt in your hair because it can prevent the color from processing correctly (oil can also make blonde hair appear darker before coloring.)

Be A Realist: If your inspiration comes from someone with thick, wavy hair and highlights but you have fine, straight hair, know that the color won't look exactly the same. Different textures and thicknesses will change how the color complements the hair.
